Jack Petchey Speak Out Regional Finals

Posted by: on 22-03-2018

On the evening of Monday 19th March, Year 10 students’ Lucy Taylor and Fintan Lewis represented Hollyfield at the Jack Petchey Speak Out Regional Finals held this year at Tolworth Girls School. The Jack Petchey Speak Out competition is “the worlds biggest youth speaking event”, held annually and hosts the very best of the regions public school speakers.

The first round was held at our school and both Fintan and Lucy won through to represent the school at the regional finals. The competition aims to develop student’s communication skills for public speaking, boosting confidence and creativity. Fintan and Lucy, along with 20 other borough winners, spoke to over 150 audience members (including the Mayor Sir Ed Davey MP for Kingston and Surbiton) plus a select judge panel of public speaking experts for three minutes.

Both our Hollyfield students were outstanding and said not only how thoroughly enjoying the experience was but also learning new and interesting ways of thinking through the competition. Fintan’s speech on the “industry” overhyping products only for the consumer to be let down by the outcome was clever, engaging and honest. Lucy’s witty anecdotal style encouraged the audience to think about diluting confidence in our modern society in a speech about how we need to consider fear as a valuable tool in decision making. Michael Ronayne, organiser of the event said: “both Hollyfield students’ spoke outstandingly, carrying themselves well with charm and passion and are a credit to the school”. We are very proud of them both. Well done Lucy and Fintan.
